Security at SBH
The security of our patients, staff, visitors, and everyone else on campus is something we take very seriously at St. Boniface Hospital.
We have a 24/7 Protection Services team on site to keep people safe. Many members of this team are Institutional Safety Officers (ISOs) who receive an even higher level of training. Guards are stationed throughout the hospital and can respond to incidents and assist both staff and the public.
We have closed-circuit camera surveillance throughout the campus, with newly upgraded higher-definition video that allows guards to view a crisper image. Amnesty lockers in the vestibule of our Emergency Department allow people to check their bags without judgement on the way in, helping to ensure weapons and other potentially dangerous items are kept locked up and not brought inside the hospital.
We offer Safe Walks for staff to vehicles in our parking lots, and have a roving security patrol vehicle that patrols our Taché Avenue parkade overnight. The parkade also recently had key-card access installed at its sidewalk-level entrance, to ensure only paid parkers and staff with passes can access the parkade from that entrance.
Code White protocols are in place for our staff, so that violent incidents involving patients or visitors can be responded to right away by trained security personnel, while personal security seminars delivered by Winnipeg Police have offered staff another tool in their toolkit for helping to keep everyone safe.
In January 2026, the Shared Health Safe smartphone app will be launching at St. Boniface Hospital, enabling users to receive “Hold and Secure” notifications when there is a recognized threat on campus or nearby. The app also allows a direct connection to SBH security, lets users request Safe Walks, and can allow users to let others track their progress as they make their way to their vehicle.
We recognize no one security solution can prevent all incidents, and there is always work to do to improve, but St. Boniface Hospital is committed to a workplace and a place of healing for the public that is as safe for everyone as it possibly can be.
