Accessibility
Accessibility standards are the building blocks of real, measurable and effective changes to accessibility. Accessibility tools, resources and strategies can help improve access to health services for everyone, not just people who experience barriers and challenges due to physical, mental, cognitive or emotional factors.
The Winnipeg Health Region’s Accessibility Committee includes representatives from organizations of persons with disabilities, businesses, municipalities, and other stakeholders. The committee is responsible for ensuring that the region complies with the AMA by identifying and facilitating the removal of barriers to equal access among persons with disabilities, including patients, their families, visitors, employees, physicians and volunteers.

Language Services
We recognize that we are a culturally diverse province, and our responsibility to the community at large is to make every effort to provide services in words and in a language that our patients can understand. Staff and physicians are encouraged to communicate with patients in their language of choice whenever possible. Staff are also encouraged to seek the assistance of volunteer interpreters to facilitate communication with patients and families.
However, by our tradition, our location in the heart of St. Boniface, and because SBH is the provincial referral centre for the French-speaking population, the Province has designated our hospital to offer services in French to its patients. It is part of our mission and our responsibility to the community to actively provide services in French.
Studies have shown that patients respond better to care and treatments when they are able to communicate with their caregiver in their mother tongue. As we work to become a more relationship and patient centered organization, respect and attention to a patient’s communication needs are critical.
