How to Apply

Step 1: Complete the application form

We take our commitment to patients seriously and screen potential volunteers thoroughly. Please complete the application form as accurately as possible – your application will help us place you in an appropriate volunteer position. Youth volunteers must have signed parental consent when applying.

Step 2: Interview with Volunteer Services

Once we receive your application, staff from Volunteer Services may call you to arrange a date and time for an interview. Applicants for the Patient Family Advisory Council or Rapid Improvement Events will be contacted by staff from the Patient Safety & Quality Office. The interview is an opportunity for Volunteer Services to learn more about your interests and volunteering goals, and an opportunity for you to ask questions. You will be asked to provide three references – references from family members or personal friends will not be accepted, unless you were employed by them.

Step 3: Screening

Following the interview, staff from Volunteer Services will contact your references. A Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check may be required for some positions.

Step 4: Volunteer placement

If you are a successful volunteer candidate, staff from Volunteer Services will contact you to offer you a volunteer position matched to your skills, abilities, and availability. If you accept the position, you will determine a start date with Volunteer Services staff.

Step 5: Training and orientation

All volunteers will go through an orientation session that provides an overview of St. Boniface Hospital and the work of the Grey Nuns. You will be provided with information needed to perform efficiently as a volunteer, including information on patient confidentiality and infection control practices. Volunteers also receive training for their particular assignment to assist them in becoming comfortable in their role.
